Title A name given to the resource The Ovambo Reserve Otjeru (1911-1938): The Story of an African Community in Central Namibia Description An account of the resource "In the following pages I try to reconstruct the history of the settlement at Otjeru and of its inhabitants. My writing draws from oral information received by people whose family histories are deeply connected with the place, but is mainly based on archival sources produced by various colonial officials and missionaries. Without fully engaging with the discussion about the narratives of colonial archives and the ways these shape history I will make some clarification with regard to my own understanding. The colonial archives are based on the need and logic of the colonial project. The information produced by colonial officials is very biased and selective and the way it is stored and classified reflects colonial rule and order. The structure of the archive influences historical research and writing. Depending on the logic and interest of the colonial power, the people living at Otjeru are constructed and documented as a community at certain moment in times, whereas no evidence can be found of the very same people for other periods. The production of information by the colonial apparatus is very often connected to situations perceived as exceptional or pivotal by the colonial state and were therefore cause for special intervention. The main producers of information were the representatives of the colonial power, i.e. army or police officers, magistrates, etc. The realities of the colonial archive are not without consequences for the historian's research and writing. My reconstruction of the history of Otjeru, too, follows the logic of the archive, in so far as the density of my writing heavily depends on the availability of sources. Yet, instead of providing a streamlined narrative, the reader is continuously informed in what follows about the conditions of writing, the producers of information and the nature of the sources forming the backbone of this text." Title A name given to the resource Effects of parental involvement in education - a case study in namibia Description An account of the resource M.A. Thesis - Education - In my research, I endeavour to ascertain how parental involvement at Combretum Trust School in Namibia affects the academic achievement of students. In the educational literature it is often claimed that involvement of parents results in better academic achievement than if parents are not involved. The aim of the research is to see if this relationship exists at a school in Namibia, a developing country that faces many educational challenges. In this case study a qualitative research approach was used. Data was gathered by interviewing parents of seven students at Combretum Trust School in Windhoek, who all have achieved academically. The objective of the interviews was to learn if and how the parents are involved in their children’s education. In addition, I wanted to gain information as to the experiences and attitudes of those parents towards their children’s education and education in general. The main findings are that all the parents who were interviewed are highly involved with their children’s education. They have high expectations towards their children’s education and their future. In addition, they are all quite vocal about their expectations to their children. The parents all recognise the importance of staying involved with their child’s education and participate fully. All the parents want to know how their child spends his or her time outside of school and with whom their child spends his or her time. Most of the parents consider themselves to have a good relationship with their child’s teachers and the school. Homework is considered to be important by each parent and they all assist their child with homework if the need arises. Thus, it may be concluded that by staying involved with their children’s education in this way the parents do impact positively on the academic achievement of the students chosen for this study at Combretum Trust School in Namibia. Title A name given to the resource Namibia and the Nordic countries Description An account of the resource Since the establishment in 1962 of the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies, it has followed events in Southern Africa and has been active in disseminating information about the region through seminars and publications. In 1981 the situation in Namibia has been highlighted by intensification of the war as weIl as by diplomatic activities. In spite of temporary setbacks recent ly it can be anticipated that the liberation struggle in combination with diplomatic initiatives will result in an independent Namibia within this decade. In order to illuminate the role played by the Nordic countries in the liberation of Namibia the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies organized a seminar called "Namibia and the Nordic Countries" in March 1981. This booklet is a by-product of the seminar. Its aim is to outline the official positions of the Nordic governrnents (except Iceland) as regards Namibia. The emphasis is on the debate in the United Nations and on assistance towards the liberation of Namibia. Non-governmental assistance is also included as weIl as available information on trade between the Nordic countries and Namibia. Due to the special relationship between Finland and Namibia (i.e. Finnish missionary activity in Namibia since 1870) the section on Finland is more elaborate than those of the other Nordic countries. The historical background to the relations between Finland and Namibia as weIl as the various Finnish initiatives in the UN are outlined. The booklet has been written by research fellows at the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies. It is hoped that it will serve as a brie f introduction to relations between the Nordic countries and Namibia. These document various resources on Namibian studies available throughout Finland. There are microfilms of the Emil Liljeblad collection, the German government records, the German Colonial Society, Namibian newspapers (colonial), microfiche copies of some documents from the National Archives of Namibia, the German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wuppertal, and many printed documents and journals. Some may find this difficult to read, because it schizophrenically switches between Finnish and English, but if you take your time, you can find good files. Note that, like most Finnish Research on Namibia, these largely deal with Ovamboland and the North. Title A name given to the resource Breaking Contract: The Story of Helao Vinnia Ndadi Description An account of the resource "Breaking Contract gives a unique insight into the conditions, events and personalities which gave rise to the formation of the South West African People's Organisation, SWAPO of Namibia, and the launching of the armed struggle for freedom from South Africa. The book takes its name from the system of migrant contract labour which had a profound effect on the lives of Namibian and shaped resistance to South African rule. The life story of Helao Vinnia Ndadi, was recorded and edited by Dennis Mercer, a journalist working with the Liberation Support Movement of British Columbia. Breaking Contract was first published by LSM Press in Canada in 1974 and included the illustrations by Allison Warner reproduced in this edition. A second edition was published by the London-based International Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa (IDAF) in 1989. Breaking Contract documents, in Ndadi 's own words, his experiences as a contract worker under apartheid and his role in organising the Owamboland People's Organisation, which in 1960 became SWAPO. Minor changes and corrections have been made to this edition, mostly in the spelling of names. The original foreword and introduction have been replaced and Ndadi has written a new postscript."
